Non-Invasive prenatal testing (Harmony Test)

The Non-Invasive Prenatal Test (NIPT) is a blood test that analyses free fetal DNA in the maternal circulation for the most common chromosomal abnormalities such as Down Syndrome. NIPT can also report the sex of your baby.

NIPT is also referred to as the Harmony test.

The NIPT can be undertaken from 10 weeks gestation. If you have not yet had a pregnancy scan to confirm the dates of your pregnancy this will need to be done at the same time as your NIPT blood test. Please mention this at the time of booking.

Please stay hydrated for the appointment.

About the Harmony Prenatal Test Procedure

If you have not yet had a pregnancy scan to confirm the dates of your pregnancy this will be done first. Please see our Early Pregnancy Scan page for details of this procedure.

Once we have confirmed the dates of your pregnancy, we will discuss any questions you may have and draw the blood needed for the NIPT test.

Duration of Appointment

Approximately 30-45 minutes.

After Your Test

The NIPT results will be available in 7-10 working days, and we will send them to you via email.

In some cases, not enough fetal DNA is detected, and a repeat blood test is needed (no extra cost associated with this). In rare instances despite multiple redraws, the test cannot be performed. In these instances, your doctor will be able to advise if further testing is recommended.
