Men’s health

Men’s Health checks involve the prevention and early detection of common medical conditions such as high blood pressure, heart and vascular disease, diabetes and cancers. We are also very experienced in dealing with prostate problems, erectile dysfunction and mental health issues including depression. O
ur doctors understand that men have specific health issues which can vary with different stages of life. At Indigo Medical we are sensitive to the difficulties inherent in discussing these issues and are experienced in helping to address and manage them.

Well Man Checks

C
ome in for a check with the doctor of your choice. This is not only a great overall checkup, but it allows us to pick up on any early warning signs for a variety of illnesses and tests.

Your “Well Man Check” will include:

  • Full physical examination and discussion of your medical family tree to identify any particular genetic health risks

Blood pressure test

  • Examination of the cardiovascular, respiratory and gastrointestinal system
  • Testing for Diabetes
  • Heart Attack and Stroke risk analysis
  • Height and weight check and body mass index
  • Prostate screening and STD check (if requested)
  • Urine analysis screening for disease of the bladder and kidneys
  • Expert advice regarding “lifestyle”, including diet and weight loss, smoking, alcohol and exercise
  • Blood testing for anaemia, kidney, liver and thyroid function and cholesterol plus any specific metabolic or genetic testing suggested by your family history
  • When the results are back within a week we can arrange for a telephone consultation or review at the surgery.

W
e can also arrange for you to have an ECG. This can look for any evidence of rhythm problems or point to some signs of heart disease. It is a very good screening tool. Dr David Howell and Dr Matt Doyle can do this at the time of your appointment but please let the receptionists know so they can allow enough time.

Alternatively you can see your usual Doctor but if you require an ECG it is likely to be done at a separate time

Women’s health checks

Indigo Medical offer Women’s health checks, and are dedicated to managing health issues thoroughly in a comfortable confidential setting.

We have three female Doctors – Dr Sheila Richards, Dr Luisa Gleeson and Dr Angela Osborn but please feel free to see any of the Doctors.

Consultations may cover family planning, contraceptive advice, pregnancy care, fertility advice, health screening including cervical smears, breast examinations & sexual health screening. Please ensure you advise our friendly receptionists if you require a smear or have several medical conditions to discuss with the doctor so we may allow for a longer consultation.

Cervical Smear

This test involves taking a small sample of cells from the cervix to be tested for cell changes. While a little uncomfortable, the test is quick and simple, and allows for the detection of cell changes which can then be treated. All women who have ever been sexually active in their lifetimes need to have regular tests, even if they are no longer sexually active. Women are generally screened from the ages of 25 through to age 65.

Breast Screening

During a Women’s Health Check, a breast examination can also be carried out. Once women turn 50 years of age, mammogram screening is also arranged at this time and continues on a three yearly basis

STD Screening

In women who feel that it is relevant to them, sexually transmitted disease screening can be conducted during the consultation. As STDs can occur without the woman experiencing symptoms, screening can be carried out as part of a women’s health check. Women are also invited to discuss other matters that may be of concern to them. These may include:

  • Contraceptive Options
  • Menopause
  • Sleep
  • Mood disorders or symptoms of anxiety and depression
  • Nutrition
  • Exercise
  • Other preventative health measures such as blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes checks.
